Questions, orders, auxiliary verbs meaning can, may, must, should,
phrasal verbs, conjunctions, pre– and postpositions, showing case
relationships. These are those examples given exclusively in Roman
script in the book, rewritten to use Cyrillic.
- (Би)–кунам: I would make
- (Би)–куни: You would make
- (Би)–кунад: He, she would make
- (Би)–кунем: We would make
- (Би)–кунед/–кунетон: You [plural
and distancing] would make
- (Би)–кунанд: They would make
- Ман мехоҳам ин филмро бинам: I
want to see this film.
- Ҳамроҳ ношито кунем чи?: Will we
breakfast together?
- Куҷо равам?: Where should I go?
- Оре, Бале: Yes
- Оё, Магар, –ми: [Interrogative
particles, the first two used at the start of a sentence to indicate
it’s a question, the last two at the end. Note that the <ми>
has both stress and excessive length ]
- Билет харедми?: Did you [plural or
distancing] buy the ticket?
- Оё ӯ сиҳат аст?: Is he healthy?
- Ки?: Who?
- Кадом?: How, which? [German „Wie“,
which of course has more functions.]
- Чӣ?: What?
- Чӣ тавр?: How? In what way?
[Literal translation is ‘what way?’—ach, I love this.]
- Чӣ хел/гуна?: Which? [‘What
kind?’]
- Кай?: When?
- (Дар) Куҷо? : [In] Where?
- Аз куҷо?: Where from?
- (Ба) Куҷо?: Where to?
- Чаро?: Why?
- Чанд?: How much?
- Чандум?: [Wievielte/r? There, of
course, is no elegant direct translation of that into
English. ‘Howmanyth?’ is at least understandable. ]
- Шумо аз куҷо ҳастед?: Where are
you from?
- Инро ба шумо ки гуфт?: Who said
that to you?
- Ӯ куҷо зиндаги мекунад?: Where
does he live?
- Чанд пул?: How much money does
that cost?
- Ту намедонӣ: You don’t know
[that].
- Оё ту намедонӣ?: Don’t you know
that?
- (Би–)Кун!: Do!, Make!

- (Би–)Гир!: Take! [2nd. singular

- Бихонед: Read! [2nd plural and formal
singular, imperative.]
- Накун!: Don’t do [that]! [2nd plural and
formal singular, imperative.]
- Нахонед: Don’t read! [2nd plural and
formal singular, imperative.]
- Хостан, хоҳ–: To want, to desire.
- Шумо чӣ мехоҳед?: What do you [formal
singular] want?
- Ман ӯро дидан мехоҳам: I want to see
him.
- Ман об мехоҳам: I want water. [I’m
thirsty.]
- Ман хӯрок мехоҳам: I want food. [I’m
hungry.]
- Мо мехоҳем ки шаҳрро тамошо кунем: We’d
like to see the city.
- Ман мехоҳам ин намоишгоҳро бинам: I’d
like to see this presentation.
- Ӯ шино карда ме тавонад: He knows how to
swim.
- Ту чӣ кор карда ме тавонӣ?: What do you
know how to do?
- Доруро дар куҷо харидан мумкин (аст) ?:
Where can one buy medicine?
- Даромадан мумкин(ми)?: May one enter?
- Даромадан мумкин нест: No entry. (No-one
may enter, effectively.)
- Тамоку кашидан манЪ аст!: No smoking.
- Боҷад: Necessary.
- Мо соати чанд боҷад таййор шавем? : When
do we have to be ready for?
- Ӯ бояд зуд ояд: He must come soon.
- Ман бояд телефон кунам: I need to
telephone.
- Даркор, лозим: Necessary.
- Таксӣро ҷеғ задан лозим аст: Someone
should order a taxi.
- Ҳароратро санҷиндан даркор: Someone
should measure the temperature.
- Шуморо диданам лозим!: I need to see
you!
- Кор кардан: To work (‘work make.’)
- Ханда кардан: To smile (‘smile make.’)
- Нигоҳ кардан: To look (‘glance make.’)
